Talk the Talk

Looking over the inspiring interiors WE liked, Erin helped us identify the interior design elements of the styles WE chose.  Here's how she described OUR look: From the looks of your pictures, you guys like a mix of furniture with traditional lines, pops of color/graphic prints, and tend to like a mix of cottage/rustic and hollywood regency styles.  The next logical question for the interior design illiterati is ... what are traditional lines?  What is the cottage/rustic style?  What is the hollywood regency style?  Here's a lowdown on the lingo.

Traditional Lines: "Traditional style interiors are comforting and classic ... Furnishings are classic and might feel outdated. Nothing is a surprise. Pieces match and are consistent.  Furniture and accessories are placed in pairs and centered in the room. There is nothing out of place or of a different style. Everything has the look that it goes together. Traditional rooms are not ostentations but rather somewhat casual. Furniture pieces are often reproductions. Modern, eclectic pieces have no room in a traditional space." About.com

Cottage/Rustic Style: "Cottage Style Decorating is a look that is cozy and comfortable. A homey atmosphere that allows room for your own personal taste to shine through. It's nothing too formal or stuffy, and welcomes everyone to relax and feel at ease...There are pale and vibrant colors and everything from painted, distressed furniture to slipcovered and traditional. There is also vintage style mixed with classic and more modern decor. Cottage style decorating includes everything under the sun and can be achieved by anyone-even you! " CottageHomeDecorating.com

Hollywood Regency Style: "Hollywood Regency design is meant to be an eclectic mix of styles with one overarching luxurious theme...The whole concept is that this is a suite of furniture for an individual...It's classic furniture that never goes out of style. It's back because it's luxurious and glamorous, and because you can create an individual look because it allows you to mix and create your own living space...While Hollywood Regency design is a throwback to another era, it's still incredibly modern and relevant to today's hurried lifestyle, where people view homes as havens where they can relax. "The whole style is about enjoying people, enjoying time [together]," says Butera. "It's about glamour and getting a glimpse of those bygone days where TV was less important and it was about cocktail hour and company." HGTV.com

Predictable. Eclectic. Luxurious. Not ostentatiouss. Does anyone else find these definitions to be contradictory?  I understand why decorating has been such a challenge!  Despite contrasting elements of each style, however, there is a common theme - all create a unique living space set with a classic look for a social lifestyle.   Now that's speaking our language.
